In most cases, this symbiosis is a mutually beneficial association, with both the fungus and the plant benefiting from the interaction.

🌿 The plant, through photosynthesis, absorbs carbon from the atmosphere and converts it into sugars used as an energy reserve. In return, the plant provides part of this carbon to the fungus. The fungus, in turn, is adept at breaking down the organic matter in the soil into smaller components, such as reduced organic compounds, amino acids, and proteins. Additionally, the fungus can capture and transfer mineral elements from the soil to the plant. This mutual collaboration optimizes the nutrient supply for both organisms.

🍄There are products that contain inocula, which are like a dormant form of the fungus that becomes active as soon as it is distributed on the soil and wetted.

▶️Other benefits include:

– increased water availability and, consequently,
– greater resistance to water stress;
– protection against parasitic fungi and nematodes;
– transfer of nutrients from dead plants to live ones.

Mycorrhizae are fungi that live in symbiosis with the roots of virtually all plants.
